Yagi spent 12 seasons from the late 1970s through the early 1980s as head coach of the Vulcans men’s basketball team, compiling a record of 252-126.

He took the Vulcans to the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics national tournament three times, and more importantly, put UH-Hilo basketball on the map as the biggest game in town.

After coaching the Vulcans, Yagi also taught youth basketball camps in Europe, alongside Kobe Bryant and Dirk Nowitzki.
