The 32nd Hawai‘i State Legislature kicked off this week with its opening day featuring speeches from Senate President Ronald Kouchi and House Speaker Scott Saiki.

It was clear that Maui’s recovery following the devastating wildfire in August 2023 that decimated much of Lāhainā and left nearly 100 people dead was top of mind for lawmakers. Issues laid bare as a result of the fire will also be prioritized with the legislature looking at wildfire mitigation, emergency plans for communities and schools and affordable housing.

Saiki talked about addressing short-term vacation rentals and giving counties the power to phase them out of communities. He also plans to address water management.
